We watch as Jeb Maykut finishes his work on a gorgeous Japanese sleeve at New York City’s Five Points Tattoo in this episode of Sessions.
Located in the historic Chinatown neighborhood of New York City, Tattoodo caught up with Jeb Maykut. A resident tattooer at Five Points, Jeb mainly focuses on Japanese tattooing, with a touch of the Traditional style. With bold black lines and vivid colors, his work has a concentration of iconic designs and themes, but Jeb likes to make sure that he, and the client he tattoos, has in-depth knowledge of the history behind the images. For this particular Japanese sleeve, florals and a mythical beast were the main design element so Jeb talks about the power and mythology of peonies and Shishi’s, also known as Foo Dogs, in Japanese iconography and why they make such great tattoos.
Like many tattoo artists, Jeb talks about how difficult it was when he first got started in the industry. When he was told that he wouldn’t be able to figure out how to tattoo, he took the initiative upon himself to learn it partly just to prove them wrong. Feeling empowered as an artist, even his style came naturally as he followed his interests and became technically more refined. Now, he’s considered one of the best tattooists in NYC with this particular aesthetic. Japanese sleeves, back pieces and even a scalp tattoo here or there, Jeb Maykut is a perfect example of the high-quality artists New York City plays host to.
